Witton Hall, now in use as a farmhouse, is
on the site of the old leper hospital of St. Mary Magdalene, which had owed
its existence to the generosity of Gilbert de la Ley, the Norman who had
become Lord of Witton in the year 1120. The lands he owned extended beyond
Witton to Beau Repaire (Bearpark) . Beamish, and Tanfield, the latter still
bears his name in "Tanfield Lea". Behind you is St. Michael and All Angels. To return to the main site click Witton Gilbert at the top.
